Whether you’ve got an inflatable kiddie pool, or your kids are playing in standard swimming pools, pool safety is always important. No matter how deep the water, there’s always a risk if you don’t properly watch your children. Here’s a guide to the essential pool safety tips to bear in mind.
1) Always Watch Your Children
The number one rule of pool safety is never to leave your kids alone, even for just a minute. Make sure an adult is supervising the children at absolutely all times. If your child is younger than five then you need to make sure you’re within an arm’s reach of the child at all times. These rules apply even if your child has had swimming lessons.
2) Install A Fence Around The Pool
The number one reason why young children drown in pools is because they wander outside and into the pool without their parents noticing. To help prevent this, install a child-proof fence (that your kids can’t climb over, under or through) around all sides of the pool. The fence should be four feet high, with any vertical slats less than four inches apart (so your child can’t climb through), and with latches on gates out of the child’s reach. You should also add pool covers and alarms for maximum protection. The same applies to hot tubs and spas.
3) Think Fast
If a child has gone missing then always check the pool first. The few seconds you take could mean the difference between life and death. If you have a pool, you should also learn CPR in the event that anything bad should happen.
