Back to School Ideas for the Environmentally Conscious Parent

With an increased emphasis on the way we affect our planet and its climate, many parents are now looking for green back to school ideas that keep their carbon footprint down to a minimum. Although this isn’t always easy where kids are concerned, there are a few things you can do.

Buy As Little As Possible

The best of all the green back to school ideas is simply to buy as little as possible. You won’t be contributing to waste, or buying any environmentally-harmful materials, if you don’t buy anything at all! Although this is easier said than done when it comes to back to school shopping, take some time out to have a long hard think about what you’ve already got that could be re-used, or whether certain items that stores have on sale are actually essential.

When you’re going through what you already have, don’t automatically throw out anything that’s damaged or no longer fits your child. The chances are that a lot of those items can be fixed, or donated to other children to be reused. You could save material from old school clothes to make eco-friendly reusable cloth bags for your grocery shopping. Think outside the box here!

How to Save the Most Money in Back To School Sales

Just before it’s time for the kids to go back to school, a number of stores start promoting their back to school sales. Although you can get some good deals in these sales, sometimes the offers aren’t all that they may seem. It certainly pays to spend a more little time if you want to save more money.

1) Don’t Buy What You Don’t Need

It may seem obvious, but buying things you and your kids don’t really need is just a waste of money. Stores might entice you with three-for-two offers, or stylish new designs on long lasting items. Try to rise above all the offers being presented to you and think carefully. Doesn’t your child already have a ruler that performs its function perfectly well? Couldn’t you re-use those exercise books from the year before? One of the best ways to make sure you only buy what you need in the back to school sales is to make a shopping list before you go out and stick to that list!

2) Avoid Designer Items

When designer items are knocked down in price, it can be very tempting to buy them thinking you’re getting a great deal. But the chances are that, even when on sale, designer back to school items are still going to cost you a lot more than store-brand equivalents. If you really need to save money you don’t need designer. You can still find stylish clothes and accessories without the high price tag.

This is usually very well priced but still in good condition. Plus it’s eco-friendly as it stop old uniforms being wasted!

Take Advantage of Summer Sales

Stores will be full of back to school items specially chosen and sold at full price. However, take a look in other areas of the store to find the clothes in their summer sales. Although these are designed for summer and are being off sold cheap at the end of the season, some items are bound to be suitable for school and will be much cheaper! This includes short sleeved t-shirts (these can be layered in winter), accessories, underwear, jeans, socks, summer sweaters, skirts and dresses.
