Very few of us are perfectly happy with our hair. Maybe I’m guilty of projecting a little, but as a former salon employee, I think that statement is true. We want it longer, thicker, smoother, shinier, blonder, redder, darker, curlier, straighter, just about anything but what it actually is. But you don’t have to beat your hair into submission. You can nurture it to be the best hair it can be.
Start by treating your hair gently. Your hair can hardly look its best if you tear at tangles while it’s wet, for instance. All that does, besides get out a few frustrations, is cause split ends and breakage. Split ends make your hair look ratty, but worse is that they eventually travel up the hair shaft until the weakened strand eventually snaps — and just like that you lose one, two, five inches, or even more, of length. Comb out knots carefully, use a detangling spray if necessary, and preferably on dry hair.
All those split ends you’re sporting? Cut them off. Your hair may have to be cut to a length shorter than you desire, but your hair will look and be healthier with them gone. Then treat your newly trimmed hair with care to avoid recreating the damage.
Also avoid further damage by cutting back on heat styling. While you’re in your stylist’s chair, have him show you how to achieve a great look without the use of a hair dryer or curling rod or flat iron.
