Preparing for the Arrival of Your Baby

Most expectant parents approach their estimated delivery date with excitement but also a little apprehension. It can help to ease those ‘baby nerves’ if you are organized and know that you are ready for the arrival of your little one and have all the essential purchases ready at least a few weeks before your due date. There are many many items available for babies – toys, chairs, a baby activity table and other gadgets but before your baby is born, try to stick to the true essentials.

Don’t panic about buying everything you could possibly ever need for your baby. There will be plenty of chances to buy things later, as long as you have the essentials that cover eating, sleeping and staying warm with appropriate clothing.

To prepare for your baby’s arrival, you’ll need to pack a hospital bag with at least enough clothes for the first couple of days. A baby clothes list will show you how many you need of each item, or many stores sell starter kits which include everything you need for the first couple of weeks of your baby’s life.

All babies need somewhere to sleep, whether it is in their parents’ bed or in their very own crib. Most parents will end up buying a crib at some stage and there are lots to choose from to fit in with your nursery decoration. You can save money by buying a used crib but be sure to buy a new mattress and bedding for your baby.

There are lots of different types of bottles available but your baby will probably be just as happy with the cheap most basic versions. Choose a teat that is specifically designed for newborns. Bottles can be sterilized easily in a pan of boiling water if you want to avoid the expense of a sterilizing unit.

A car seat suitable for newborns is another must have item if you have a car. Don’t buy a second hand seat and make sure the seat you choose is properly installed.
