Extra Garage Storage – Buy Pre-Assembled or Do-It-Yourself?

Unless you have a house with a basement or a very large attic, it can be challenging in finding additional storage space for all of your excess household items, especially if you have a newer home, which these days seem to eliminate closet space in order to make the rooms larger. So if you are on the hunt to increase your current garage storage space, there are several different options you can investigate in terms of what you can use for storage units.

If you are don’t mind taking a do-it-yourself approach, then building extra shelving or storage cabinets in your garage is a logical choice. You can even use software these days to do all the necessary calculations, allowing you to create and experiment with different storage layouts to see what will offer the most storage space.  These garage shelving plans generated by the software will print out a quantities list, with accurate costings based on your inputs. Definitely a great aid in pricing your shelving/storage project.

Another option you can follow is to buy pre-fabricated steel shelving. Pre-fab shelving comes fixed standard sizes so, you will need to accurately plan your shelving layout for the dimensions of your garage. Steel shelving is expensive, but it’s easy to assemble, is self-standing, and is very durable, lasting for years.

Another choice for shelving , besides pre-fabricated steel shelving, is the old fashioned wooden shelving, purchased from your local hardware store, and installed using shelving brackets and wall screws. Be sure to not to space the brackets out too far with timber shelving, or the shelves when laden, will bow in the middle if support isn’t sufficient for the shelves a fully laden. Attaching shelves to the walls does offer less flexibility than a  free standing shelving unit but will also cost a fair bit less then free standing shelving.

So in summary, work out a budget for purchasing extra garage storage, decide if you’re going to DIY or buy pre-assembled. Once decided, it’s then just a matter of shopping for the best prices at you local hardware store. Also search online too, as there are many shelving and storage cabinet bargains to be found online from the bigger chain hardware outlets
